CPC Honors Essential Workers and DoorDash CEO Tony Xu

at Annual Lunar New Year Benefit

New York, NY - The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC), the nation’s largest Asian American social services organization, celebrated the Lunar New Year to honor essential workers and Tony Xu, Co-founder and CEO of DoorDash, at CPC’s Lunar New Year Benefit on Thursday, March 18, 2021.

Given the challenging circumstances, CPC created an exciting alternative to its traditional gala – its first-ever virtual benefit! CPC’s Lunar New Year Benefit is its signature fundraising event, usually attracting more than 1,000 in-person guests including elected official, community and business leaders. Although we could not celebrate in the same way this year, nearly 500 guests were in attendance to honor essential workers tirelessly serving for our community during this unprecedented time while ringing in the Year of the Ox together. The event raised over $490,000 to support essential services for Asian American, immigrant and low-income communities.

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer attended the event and gave welcome and congratulatory remarks. Over 13 elected officials submitted their greetings which can be viewed at https://www.cpc-nyc.org/events/cpcs-lunar-new-year-virtual-benefit, including US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, US Representative Grace Meng, NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, NYS Senator Andrew Gounardes, NYS Senator John Liu, NYS Assemblymember Peter J. Abbate, Jr. NYS Assemblymember Ron Kim, NYS Assemblymember Nily Rozic, Mayor Bill de Blasio, NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson, and NYC Councilmember Peter Koo.

CPC’s Honoree of the Year 2021 is Tony Xu, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of DoorDash, a technology company passionate about transforming local businesses and dedicated to enabling new ways of working, earning, and living. He remarked, “CPC’s mission to promote social and economic empowerment of immigrants and low-income communities is truly admirable and makes today’s honor even more meaningful to me.” Tony also announced the partnership between DoorDash and CPC to support New York City residents and small businesses.

“CPC thanks sponsors, partners, and supporters for making this celebration a success. During this turbulent time, the community’s support has enabled CPC to provide essential services to the most vulnerable. Tonight’s proceeds will help CPC address the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and promote a fair, equitable recovery for our community members,” said Wayne Ho, President and CEO of the Chinese-American Planning Council.
