New York, NY The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) announced today that the dining hall of the Nan Shan Senior Center in Flushing, Queens, is now named the Maria Poon Memorial Hall. An unveiling ceremony was held in honor of community member Maria Poon and her continuous contributions to CPC and the community.

Maria Poon was a long-time supporter and contributor to CPC. As a visitor of Nan Shan Senior Center, she was noted for her bright smile and a passion to support the community. She was always eager to share her knowledge and help others, especially new immigrants, to better cope with everyday living. Poon passed away in 2020.

"My mother has always been a trail-blazer in her community,” said Elizabeth Poon, daughter of Maria Poon. “She encouraged our family to lift-up others, in ways large and small. Her spirit will live on, and her actions amplified through CPC’s important work in the community.”

The Poon Family’s multi-year donation is earmarked for CPC’s senior services and to name the dining hall of the Nan Shan Senior Center in memory of Maria Poon.

“We are grateful and honored that the Poon Family has entrusted us to honor Maria’s memory and her commitment to the community. Their generosity will allow CPC to continue carrying out Maria’s guiding principle of doing one charitable act each day,” said Wayne Ho, President & CEO of CPC. “The Maria Poon Memorial Hall will always be an inspiring, communal space for older adults to enjoy meals, conversations, and activities with friends and family.”

The Maria Poon Memorial Hall is located in the lower level of the CPC Nan Shan Senior Center. Funded by the NYC Department for the Aging, the Center has been providing older adults with meals, art programs, exercise classes, literacy courses, case assistance, and more for over 40 years.
