CPC Statement on Recent Street Scam

New York, NY – The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) would like to inform the community of a scam in Brooklyn.

Individuals are posing as CPC employees and have had tables set up near 8th Avenue in Brooklyn, where they are charging community members to fill out housing applications for low-income apartments that were allegedly made accessible through a lottery system. Once the community members are "selected” through the alleged lottery, the individuals follow-up to demand an additional fee.

These individuals are not associated with CPC. This is a common scam to use community-based organizations as a front for illicit activities.

CPC does not charge for assisting community members to apply for housing and other public benefits. Community members submit applications at our community centers by appointment or walk-in service.

We encourage community members to stay vigilant and exercise extreme caution when disclosing personal information. If you believe you are a victim of a scam, please contact the NYPD by calling 911. If you require additional assistance and any benefits support services, please contact CPC’s Albert Li at 718-492-0409 or ali@cpc-nyc.org.
