CPC Hosted the 5th Annual Queens Special Needs Summer Picnic
New York, NY – The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) hosted its 5th annual Queens Special Needs Summer Picnic on Saturday August 16, bringing together approximately 400 participants for a day of celebration, resource sharing, and community building at the Queens Botanical Garden's Four Seasons Border and Circle Garden. The event addressed ongoing challenges faced by individuals with developmental disabilities and their caregivers, providing crucial information about accessing services such as homecare, transportation support, public assistance, and benefits through interactive resource tables and direct connections with service providers.
Throughout the day, families rotated between activity stations and resource tables, exploring services, connecting with providers, and participating in games and crafts. From morning registration through the afternoon group dance finale, participants enjoyed a full schedule of engagement opportunities, including a photo opportunity with Mr. & Mrs. Met during lunch distribution.
Sponsors include National Financial Network, Health First, NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, Royal Care, MTAPD Asian Jade Society, and Raising Cane's, along with in-kind donors Trader Joe's Rego Park, Up One, JinXiu Chen, and Apollo Music Art Center. State Senator John Liu, Council Member Sandra Ung, staff from Assembly Member Nily Rozic's office, and Jessica Pidgeon, Director of Strategic Planning and Engagement at Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, joined as special guests.
“Now in our 5th year, the Special Needs Summer Picnic has grown in popularity becoming a meaningful gathering for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families,” said Jacqueline Fan, CPC Program Director of Queens Special Needs. “Community events like this not only build friendships and connections, they provide much needed resources for families who face constant challenges in their lives.”
CPC Queens Special Needs program provides a wide range of services, including family support, respite care, Medicaid service coordination, and individual residential alternatives. The picnic serves as a key social event where special needs participants and families come together to foster meaningful connections within their community and become informed about the resources available to them.
